How ClimateReady Works

ClimateReady uses a structured spatial assessment framework to understand environmental hazards, socio-economic vulnerability and local climate risk.

Assessment Framework

Environmental Data
+
Socio-economic Data
  1. Indicator Preparation
  2. Standardisation
  3. Weighted Assessment
  4. Vulnerability
  5. Risk Assessment
  6. Spatial Identification
  7. Local Recommendations

Indicators are prepared for the selected area, standardised to a common scale and combined using weights to produce a vulnerability surface. Vulnerability is then combined with hazard and exposure information to give a risk classification for each part of the area.

The same process runs for urban heat, waterlogging and air pollution, so the three dimensions can be compared side by side. Areas in the higher classes are identified spatially and linked to the indicators that contribute most, which is what the recommendations are based on.

Risk Dimensions

Urban Heat Island

Elevated urban temperatures driven by surface materials, built-up intensity and limited vegetation.

Waterlogging

Water accumulation linked to terrain, rainfall, drainage and how permeable the ground is.

Air Pollution

Exposure patterns shaped by traffic, built form, vegetation and local ventilation.

Indicators

  • LST – Land Surface Temperature
  • NDVI – Vegetation Index
  • NDBI – Built-up Intensity
  • LULC – Land use and Land cover
  • Albedo – Surface reflectivity

  • DEM – Elevation
  • Slope
  • Rainfall
  • Impervious Surface
  • Distance to Water Bodies
  • Distance to Drainage
  • Soil Type
  • NDVI – Vegetation Index
  • LULC – Land use and Land cover

  • Road density
  • LST – Land Surface Temperature
  • NDBI – Built-up Intensity
  • Wind speed
  • NDVI – Vegetation Index

  • Population density
  • Household crowding
  • LULC – Land use and Land cover
  • Children Population
  • Hospital Access
  • Residential Complex Intensity

Indicator lists are placeholders and will be updated to match the final analytical implementation.

Risk Classification

Every part of the assessed area is placed in one of five classes. Areas that are Moderate, High or Very High are treated as priority areas.

Very LowLittle contribution from risk indicators.
LowLimited contribution; monitor.
ModerateNoticeable contribution; priority for attention.
HighStrong contribution; priority for action.
Very HighHighest contribution; first priority for action.

Validation & Reliability

The framework is evaluated through consistency checks, sensitivity assessment and available validation and cross-checking approaches.

Limitations

Results are intended as a local decision-support assessment and should be interpreted alongside local knowledge, field observations and detailed planning studies.
